Is Shopify ADA compliant?

The platform is not usually your problem. Shopify’s own themes are built with accessibility in mind and its checkout is maintained by a team that takes it seriously. What gets stores into trouble is everything added on top: the theme you customised, the apps you installed, and the product pages you fill in every week.

The part that catches owners off guard

Compliance is a property of the page a customer actually loads, not of the software that generated it. Shopify can ship you a clean starting point. It cannot stop you from picking a low-contrast brand colour, installing a popup app that traps keyboard focus, or uploading four hundred product photos with no alt text.

And responsibility follows the storefront. Accessibility claims are brought against the business selling the goods, not the platform hosting the store. That is worth being clear about, because plenty of merchants assume the platform absorbs this risk. It does not.

What actually fails on Shopify stores

After enough audits, the same list keeps coming back:

What breaksWhy it happensEffort to fix
Product images with no alt textBulk uploads skip the field, or an app auto-fills it with the filenameLow, but tedious at scale
Sale badges below 4.5:1 contrastBrand colours chosen for looks, applied to small textLow — usually theme settings
Variant selectors that don’t announceCustom swatches built as styled divs instead of real form controlsMedium — theme code
Popups and quick-views that trap the keyboardThird-party apps that never handle focusMedium — sometimes means changing apps
Carousels with no pause and no keyboard accessHomepage slideshow sectionsMedium

Apps are the recurring surprise. Reviews, upsells, live chat, cookie banners, discount popups — each injects markup you did not write and cannot see in your theme editor. A store that passed an audit in March can fail in April because someone installed a new app. This is why accessibility is a maintenance habit rather than a one-time project.

Three checks you can run yourself right now

  1. Unplug your mouse. Using only Tab, Enter and the arrow keys, go from the homepage to a product, pick a variant, add to cart and reach checkout. If you get stuck or lose track of where you are, so does a keyboard-only customer.
  2. Open a product and dismiss the popup with the keyboard. If Escape does nothing and Tab cycles inside the popup forever, that is a keyboard trap and it fails WCAG 2.1.2.
  3. Look at your sale badges. White text on a light colour, or grey on white, is the most common contrast failure in e-commerce and among the fastest to fix.

Does the accessibility app in the Shopify App Store solve this?

The widgets sold as one-click compliance are overlays, and they do not fix any of the failures above. They cannot give your product images accurate alt text, cannot turn a styled div into a real form control, and cannot free a keyboard trapped inside another app’s popup. We covered that at length in whether accessibility overlays actually protect you.

Common questions

Is Shopify ADA compliant out of the box?

It gives you an accessible foundation, and the first-party themes are genuinely good. But compliance is a property of your finished store — your customisations, apps and content decide the outcome.

Who is responsible if my store isn’t accessible?

You are. Claims are brought against the merchant operating the storefront, not the platform.

Do I need to redo my whole theme?

Almost never. Most stores need a set of targeted fixes inside the theme they already have, plus a decision about one or two problem apps.
